Kami no Shizuku

The translation of Kami no Shizuku - God's drops.

Synopsis
The story revolves around Kanzuki Shizuku, a young man who was estranged from his father, a world-famous wine critic with assets worth billions of dollars. When his father passed away, he left behind a wine collection worth a fortune, but in order to inherit it, Shizuku must solve a series of puzzles left by his father to identify 6 wines. His competitor was Tomine Issei, a prominent wine critic, whom his father adopted before his death.

In the father's house, the competition begins!

This show has won Best Drama, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Actress at Nikkan Sports Drama Grand Prix - magazine readers of which the majority of voters are women in their twenties.

Reveal under the cut....

Both the wine critic/adoptive son Tomnie Issei is out to get the father's inheritance (billions of dollars) and the most expensive and luxurious wine. He is determined to beat Kanzaki. Kanzaki has only started to taste wine again and will make absolute certainty that he will not lose to the challenge his father has laid out for him. Through the process, Kanzaki discovers more about himself and wine that his father is trying to communicate through that he could not do while he was alive.

The drama relies heavily on imagery as part of the description of wines. There are different wines that also compliments well with different types of food at different times of the day and it can also depend on the year or soil to which the wine was cultivated that will determine whether it tastes good or not.

I really like the way that this drama describes the wine. I had some difficulty understanding it. This is why I think that the ratings are so low in Japan because there are tons of wine terminology and historic context that you just wouldn't be able to grasp it fully unless you are studying to become a sommelier. Sommelier is a person specialising in wine products (including knowledge of soils, lands, cultivations, process etc) and vintage. It is a much higher rank than a mere bartender. A lot of the footage also includes people harvesting grapes; especially foreign buildings and people...I wonder where they get such footage from.

The closing theme - KAT TUN's One Drop is available to listen under music soundtracks on the right. This song is pretty cool!!!

One Drop

Japanese Lyrics
Love, Dreamin', Eternity, Hope and... BYE-BYE

Only lonely your tear drop

Only lonely your tear drop

Only lonely your tear drop

Drop it, Love, Dreamin', Eternity, Hope
Teardrop, so everything and Bye-Bye

Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Only lonely your tear drop

Translation
Love, dream, eternity, hope and… Bye-bye
Bye-bye, days of solitude
Bye-bye, days long gone
I want to protect that one drop
Only lonely your tear drop
I looked at you with cold eyes
In the one drop of your heart, tears are softly falling
In these eyes are reflected
A kindness that I’d never noticed until I’d lost it
Bye-bye, entwining thread
Bye-bye, sadness of the past
Loneliness, even the tiniest wound is a reason for tears
Bye-bye, days of solitude
Bye-bye, days long gone
I want to protect that one drop
Only lonely your tear drop
We were shaken around in a prank played on us by time
Even the words left behind always made you hesitate
It’s okay to give up, it’s okay to drop the strong facade
It’s not your fault
Bye-bye, tangled thread
Bye-bye, mistakes of the past
Forgive me, even in the tiniest today there is hope for eternity
Bye-bye, lonely days
Bye-bye, the melancholy of those days
That one important drop
Only lonely your tear drop
Right in the center of this starved body
Only your scent is suspended
Whilst swaying, whilst hesitating, I still continue to believe
In that dream, and the indelible feelings in those tears
